As a web writer, your clients are Internet marketers or entrepreneurs who promote products and/or services through the Internet. How’d you like to become one of THEM?
Whether you’re aspiring to become a web writer or already have some experience, it’s an excellent idea for you to become an Internet marketer yourself.
I got started in Internet marketing soon after I started writing from home. I bought an established website and got immersed in website creation and maintenance, search engine optimization, link building, affiliate marketing, and list building.
Unfortunately, as I got busier and busier with client work, my Internet marketing efforts have fallen on the side. That said, they still continue to add a small additional income stream for me. Most of them run almost on autopilot, and the profits actually increase as time goes by even if my niche sites are all but neglected.
Here are 10 good reasons why I think Internet marketing is a good idea for web writers:
1. Keep busy while waiting for clients.
When you’re new and don’t have a steady stream of clients yet — or you’re going through a lean time — your Internet marketing business will keep you busy.
2. You can practice and sharpen your skills.
Sure, you’ve spent many hours and dollars to get excellent training. However, the lessons you get from actually implementing what you learn in real life — through your own Internet marketing efforts — are priceless and cannot be absorbed as effectively in training room or home study course.
3. You’ll have a laboratory to experiment in.
If only there were never-fail formulas for web writers to follow! But the truth is, even tried-and-true techniques sometimes fail. It’s good to have your own “lab” to see what works, what doesn’t, and when — instead of experimenting on your clients’ businesses.
4. Build up your portfolio.
By having your own Internet marketing projects, you’ll have sample works in your portfolio, even if you’re just starting out. No sales pages to show your prospects? Write an ebook and create a sales page for it. Nobody ever said your portfolio can’t consist of your own promotional materials.
5. Earn extra money.
Internet marketing is hot because it works. You really can earn money “while you sleep.” It may take time, but you’ll soon see the fruits of your efforts. You may even decide to give up freelancing altogether, eventually.
6. You’ll better understand and empathize with your prospects and clients.
If you’re an Internet marketer yourself, you’ll be thoroughly familiar with the Internet marketing jargon. You’ll know exactly where your prospects and clients are coming from, as well as what they really need and want from you, their web writer. This means you’ll be a better service provider to them.
7. Promote your services online.
You can use Internet marketing to promote your web writing business. It’s the perfect fit: use the web to attract clients and prove you really know what you’re doing.
8. Set yourself apart from your competitors.
Internet marketing has a steep learning curve and requires some investment in money and a lot of investment in time. Few writers are willing to make such an investment, which means you’ll stand head and shoulders above your competition.
9. You work better with other service providers.
As an Internet marketer, you may have to hire other service providers yourself, such as graphic designers, web coders, programmers and virtual assistants. By doing so, you’ll be better able to communicate and work with them when they’re involved in your clients’ web projects.
10. You rise to the level of “consultant.”
When you have Internet marketing expertise and experience, you’re not just a freelance web writer, but you can be an online marketing consultant as well. You can confidently give your clients advice, because you’re in the same boat and possibly have more experience than they do. As such, you can charge more than plain-vanilla web writers.
As you can see, becoming an Internet marketer will make you a better web writer and consultant. It will also give you alternative streams of income, which is very important for all self-employed individuals.

PS: I looked far and wide for an Internet marketing program to recommend to you. In fact, I’ve spent thousands of dollars buying this blueprint and that program. A lot of them are good–if you follow the plan and actually implement them. However, most give bits and pieces of the Internet marketing puzzle, leaving you to figure the rest out for yourself. That’s why I picked Nick Usborne’s program to recommend in this post. It can take you from zero to profit. The investment is modest (compared to what I paid to learn the same thing), and you get a full year to decide whether it was worth it for you or you get your money back.
