I’m a do-it-yourself’er if there ever was one.
When I see a purse I like, for example, my first thought is, “How can I make that myself?” In fact, my sister-in-law laughingly asked as I bought a skirt to turn into an apron, “Why don’t you just buy an apron?” Heck, I even insist on baking my own bread, occasionally, and my own pizza, once a week.
A lot of satisfaction comes from creating something with your own efforts.
But sometimes doing something ALL BY YOURSELF is just plain foolish.
For example, I didn’t learn how to knit all by myself — even if I did buy half a dozen books to get started. No, I had to have somebody show me exactly how the yarn should sit on the knitting needle. I had to have someone knowledgeable to answer my questions. And, thanks to the Internet, I can access the wisdom of experienced knitters even if they’re thousands of miles away from me.
Oh and don’t let me get started about maintaining my blogs all by myself. I tried it… and managed to “blow up” one of my blogs. It cost me hours of grief and hundreds of dollars to get my blog back, not to mention many months to get it back to page one of Google for its main keywords. Today, I leave my blogs in the capable hands of my VAs. I sleep much better at night, and can focus on the parts of my business I’m actually good at and enjoy.
It’s the same thing with freelancing.
You can read all the books written by the most successful freelancers. And, in fact, I highly recommend you do. I’ve learned tons from the books I myself have read, as long as I’ve taken action on them.
But sometimes, you need a more experienced person “holding your hand,” so to speak, answering your questions. No book can anticipate all your questions, after all.
For the past few weeks, I’ve been thinking of how I can better support you, my readers, in your freelancing journey. Sure, I could write another ebook… but I’d really like to do something that can have a concrete impact in your freelancing career.
My friend, Laura Spencer, and I put our heads together and we think we’ve come up with a way to serve you in a more personal way. (Laura, in case you don’t know, is a veteran freelance writer and Senior Editor of Freelance Folder.) With our upcoming offering, you’ll get exactly the answers you need to take your freelancing to the next level.
The thing is, because what we’d like to do is more hands-on than an ebook, we can only accommodate 20 freelancers at this time.
