Have you ever found a client through LinkedIn? I haven’t but I’ve heard of other freelancers who have. What are they doing that I’m not?
I interviewed THE LinkedIn expert, Lewis Howes, to give us his top tips for freelancers who want to market their services on LinkedIn. Take it away, Lewis!
1. What does LinkedIn have to offer a freelancer? If a freelancer is already on Twitter, or Facebook, why should he/she be in LinkedIn as well?
45% of people on LinkedIn are decision makers, whereas it’s 25%-29% range on Twitter and Facebook. And LinkedIn has a larger average house hold income over members of the other two. If you want to pick up more clients that have more income, and more buying power, then you’re better off connecting with more people on LinkedIn first.
2. What are your top tips for creating a LinkedIn profile? Any special advice for freelancers?
As a freelancer you have a special service that you offer. You must be clear, concise and compelling throughout your entire profile but also tell people: Who you are, Who you help, and How you help those individuals. The more specific and direct you are on your profile, the more likely you are to receive inbound leads and pick up more clients.
3. Once you have a LinkedIn profile up, what’s next? How do we actually get referrals or prospects through LinkedIn?
There are a number of ways, but the best way at first is to answer questions. If you provide an email marketing service, search for all of the questions members ask about email marketing. Then give the best answer possible with resources, tips, and other info that best solves their problem. After that, make sure to send that person a private message and ask them if you can help with any more questions. Getting them on the phone is your best bet, or taking the conversation to email… but you want to engage more with your target audience, and what better way to start then by answering questions first for the people who need help the most.
4. How can we get connected with people in our target corporations or businesses, if we don’t have any connections in common?
The best way is join groups that those members are in. Once you are in the same group, you are able to send messages to those members. The best way to connect is to send a personalized message without asking for anything, but first just looking to get to know them better. Once trust is established and you figure out their specific needs, then you can offer up your services if it makes sense.
5. What are the benefits of getting a pro LinkedIn account? Who’s it best for? Who shouldn’t use it?
It’s mostly for recruiters so you can search more profiles and send InMail to more members. Freelancers most likely do not need it as there are ways to interact with most members through the groups in the discussion and in the Q and A section.
